National Junior Honor Society

What Is National Junior Honor Society?
Cocalico Middle School’s chapter of the National Junior Honor Society(NJHS) was chartered in 2010. NJHS was organized in 1929 with chapters nationwide in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Canada. Its purpose is to acknowledge exceptional middle school students. NJHS is more than just an academic honor roll, it exists for students who have shown excellence in the five pillars of NJHS: scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship.

Students involved in NJHS are encouraged to maintain their interest for scholarship, render service in their community and school, develop leadership skills, demonstrate exemplary character, and withhold good citizenship. It is truly an honor to become a member of this organization.

What Are the Selection Guidelines for NJHS?

Note that eligible students receive introductory information regarding the induction process. Shortly after trimester 2 report cards are distributed, students will be notified of their eligibility if they have a GPA of 3.5 or above. Notification of eligibility does not equate membership.

Once students are notified, they must retrieve and complete the candidate packet and any other appropriate forms by the deadline in order to be considered for candidacy by the faculty council. Candidate packets and any other appropriate forms will not be accepted after the deadline.

A council of various CMS faculty members will review each candidate individually and decide whether or not a candidate will receive an invitation to NJHS. Every student who submitted a candidate packet will be contacted regarding whether or not they were selected for NJHS based on the criteria.

Students who receive a membership invitation will then have to notify one of the NJHS advisors regarding whether they accept or decline their invitation to NJHS.

New and current members will participate in an induction ceremony honoring each student and their commitment to the five pillars of the National Junior Honor Society.
