The goal of the World Language Department at Cocalico Middle School is to create an exciting and engaging atmosphere that encourages students to learn about language and culture. At the 6th and 7th grade levels, students learn basic vocabulary, reading and writing skills, and cultural aspects of Spanish and German speaking countries. In the 8th grade elective, students explore the language and culture over a semester in a course that culminates in taking the Spanish or German level 1 exam. With this extended and in-depth course, students expand upon their understanding of spoken and written language and begin to produce their own verbal and written language. Students in the 8th grade course learn a variety of vocabulary, grammar concepts, and cultural topics found in the level 1 curriculum. Therefore, students are prepared to enter level 2 in their freshman year.
